WHAT IS A DISTRICT LEADER

District Leaders, also known as State Committee Members in Brooklyn, represent each of the 21 Assembly Districts in Brooklyn. They are elected, unpaid volunteer leaders of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. With the Chair of the Kings County Democratic Committee (“County Committee”), all 42 of the District Leaders across the county of Brooklyn together serve as the Executive Committee. Two District Leader represent each Assembly District; every District Leader seat is up for election every two years.

But many voters have never heard of their district leaders, because if no one challenges them, they don’t appear on the ballot. In the 52nd Assembly District, there hasn’t been a competitive race for the male district leader position in many years.

District leaders play a major role in choosing judges, staffing the NYC Board of Elections, and writing the rules governing our local party. They also elect the Party Chair, who determines the party priorities and spending.

The leadership of the Brooklyn Democratic Party hasn't made it easy to participate in the voting process. In fact, they've made it harder. Meetings are held with short notice and often in far off locations, making it difficult for members to attend. In Brooklyn, unfortunately the party boss has been more concerned about filling judgeships and patronage jobs than electing Democratic candidates.

I want to give all residents in our 52nd Assembly District a voice in our Party, by holding public events, sharing information, and bringing your concerns to Party leaders. I will work to expand the role of District leader and make it more vital to voters throughout our district.
